Chinese New Year Activities

I have always loved teaching young children about this celebration. Even if you don't celebrate Chinese New Year in your family, it's important children learn about other cultures, religions and celebrations from around the world. This is a great opportunity for children to also taste new types of food, learn how to say Happy New Year in Chinese, practise some dragon dancing and even study the Chinese writing too! How To Dye Rice: The Experiment

I love to use dyed rice in sensory boxes. Natural rice is just as lovely, but bright, colourful rice can make an activity look really inviting and irrestible to touch. For many years I have used a food colouring paste to dye the rice as it's so quick and easy but recently I have noticed more and more people using poster paint so I decided to put this to the test. I dyed three lots of rice using the same method. I used poster paint from Hobbycraft, Sugarflair food colouring paste and a supermarket liquid food colouring.
